Algonquin Highlands Building Permit Office
Algonquin Highlands
Township of Algonquin Highlands
1123 North Shore Road, Algonquin Highlands, Ontario, K0M 1S0
Building permits in Algonquin Highlands are administered by the Township’s Building Department. Building permit applications are submitted through Cloudpermit, which the Township also uses for digital permit processing and inspection requests.
The Township separately operates its Planning Department for zoning and land-use matters, while on-site sewage system permits are handled through the Building Department under the Ontario Building Code.
How the Algonquin Highlands Permit Process Works
-
1
Check Zoning and Planning Requirements
Confirm that the proposed building, use, location and setbacks comply with the Township’s Comprehensive Zoning By-law. A planning application may be required when a proposal does not meet the applicable zoning provisions.
-
2
Submit the Permit Application Online
The Township directs building permit applications to Cloudpermit. Application documents and supporting material are submitted through the online system rather than through a separate municipal building-permit portal.
-
3
Complete the Municipal Review
The Building Department reviews permit applications under the Ontario Building Code, the Township Zoning By-law and other applicable legislation before a permit can be issued.
-
4
Request Required Inspections
Required construction inspections can be requested through Cloudpermit. Building and By-Law staff can also be contacted through the portal’s messaging function when assistance is needed with an active application or permit.
Algonquin Highlands uses Cloudpermit across both its Building/By-Law and Planning operations. This means a project that requires a building permit as well as a separate planning application may involve the same online platform, although the Building and Planning Departments retain different review responsibilities.
Approvals That May Affect a Building Project
Zoning and Land-Use Approval
The Planning Department administers the Township’s Official Plan and Comprehensive Zoning By-law and handles matters including minor variances and zoning amendments. The County of Haliburton Official Plan provides the broader planning direction for the Township.
Septic Permits Stay with the Township
Permits for new or altered on-site sewage systems are obtained from the Algonquin Highlands Building Department. Septic permitting is therefore not transferred to a health unit or separate regional permit authority.
Local Demolition Application Requirements
For demolition work requiring a Township permit, Algonquin Highlands identifies additional information that must accompany the application.
- A site plan showing the location and setbacks of the building being demolished in relation to lot lines and other buildings or structures on the property
- Information identifying where and how the demolition material will be disposed of
The Township also advises applicants to confirm disposal arrangements before assuming demolition material can be accepted at a municipal waste disposal site.
Managing Inspections After Permit Issuance
-
Inspection requests:
Cloudpermit provides the Township’s online workflow for requesting required inspections. -
Open permits:
The Building Department must be notified so required inspections can be completed before an open permit is closed. -
Portal communication:
Building and By-Law staff can be contacted through Cloudpermit’s messaging function for application and permit questions.
